Romanian mig 29. The romanian air force modernized 110 mig 21 lancers in cooperation with israel between 1993 and 2002. Mig 29 sniper upgrade planned for romanian air force by israeli firms. Today 48 of these mig 21 lancers are operational. 11 tfs based at tehran mehrabad international airport operates mig 29 9 12a and mig 29ub 9 51.
The mikoyan mig 29 fulcrum did much to further soviet russian aviation technology and along with the sukhoi su 27 flanker formed a powerful and highly capable one two punch for the soviet air force and its allies through the 1990s and the new millennium. The latter occurred because of high maintenance costs. Iran bought mig 29 from soviet union around 40 of which all of them 9 12a versions directly from soviet air force and also took over ex iraqi mig 29 which 4 of them around 36 in service with iriaf 30 mig 29a 9 12a and 6 mig 29ub 9 51. The program was halted along with the retiring of romanian mig 29s in 2003.
